Meggan: Hey everyone, and welcome back to Travel Tip Tuesday on the Travel Mug Podcast.

I'm here with Jenn. How's it going, Jenn?

Jenn: I'm good. How are you, Meggan?

Meggan: I'm good. Thank you. So this week I want to chat about a little gem of a spot where we stayed at just recently. And stay tuned to the end of the episode cause I actually do have a discount code where you can book online for a stay yourself.

Jenn: Oh, we love a discount code, Meggan.

Meggan: Oh. We love a code where people can save money, especially in this economy.

Jenn: Yes.

Meggan: So last summer, as regular listeners know we actually both on the show went to Europe. Jenn of course, to Scotland, and then Peter and I went to Germany and Austria and we fell in love.

And this summer we aren't planning a big European vacation, so we're trying to find some new spots locally to visit and support. Also, as regular listeners might know, we are keen to use Google Maps to discover new spots, and this is exactly what happened in this instance. Edelweiss Inn and has an amazing joining German restaurant opened amid re renovations last spring.

They were still trying to get things going, but they're like, we need to open up. So last spring they did, and it's now and it's second year, and we had a really great stay. So I just wanted to talk a little bit about it, explain where it is and why people should visit. So, It is set on 63 acres of land just outside of Middleton Nova Scotia.

So just to give you an idea, that's approximately an hour and 20 to 30 minutes from Halifax.

Jenn: Mm-hmm.

Meggan: So, owner Barbara, who is German herself, bought the Inn a few years back and arrived with a crew, including her mom amid a blizzard in February, 2021. Welcome to Nova Scotia.

Jenn: Yeah,

Meggan: so they arrived from Ontario and they were thinking literally they would just have to paint, screw in some new light bulbs and they would be set.

She even brought with her like some of her own trades, people thinking it would just be a quick job to get things up and running, and she could really have not been further from the truth, especially looking back on the one and a half years of renovations with still a few more outdoor projects to go as this episode airs.

So the inn had been left in like literal disrepair and when they went into the restaurant, Upon arrival, there were actually tables still set up as if someone had pushed away their chair and just left the restaurant thinking they were coming back the next day and no one ever returned.

Jenn: What?

Meggan: I know, can you imagine thinking you're just gonna paint some walls and put some light bulbs in and there are table settings from 20 years ago?

Jenn: I cannot. And but also Barbara, like I feel you because there is drywall dust all over my downstairs in my house right now. And I know what it's like to live in renovations.

Meggan: Yes. Yeah. And she has been living them for sure. So Barbara and her team sort of had, you know, more ahead of them than they had anticipated.

They didn't even have a working kitchen. They would like, she'd brought a cook with them, Ingrid. And she actually made food outside over a fire in like big pots because they had no working kitchen, kitchen as they were going through the renovations. But she has poured her life savings into this Nova Scotia adventure.

So they, of course got to work doing the things that they needed to do. So after so much work, including like new flooring, electrical, new outside decks, and really so much more, They are really ready now for their first full season with the interior completed in 2023.

So when we stayed there, we stayed in room one. There are nine in total, so seven on the first floor, and two on the second floor. There are stairs. So our guests should remember that and the balcony that we had overlooked the back of the property, there's a large field and there's actually, like I mentioned, 63 acres. There's lots of walking paths for visitors to explore there. Do be mindful of the ticks. I didn't touch a tree, but I ended up with two on me still.

Jenn: Yeah.

Meggan: So, yeah, just something to keep in mind. It's not Barbara's fault. That's, that's just nature.

Jenn: It's just nature.

Meggan: So the property itself is peaceful and serene. It's really escaped from the everyday hustle and bustle. It was so quiet there, it was amazing. Breakfast is included in your stay and it includes continental style with a prepared item, so a prepared hot item. So that's done by Cook Ingrid, who is stuck around a Nova Scotia since she arrived. So both days the food was really good and as I mentioned, there is a German restaurant with a head chef, Jorg he actually came from Ontario as well, originally from Germany, and his food is amazing. So definitely eat there if you stay, but even if you're just in the area, you can eat at the restaurant without having to be a guest. And they're actually a restaurant that's opened year round. So even in the winter, you could swing by Easter, whatever the occasion is, you can be there.

And the surrounding areas really quaint and Middleton is nearby and other really great Nova Scotia towns like Berwick, Annapolis Royal and Lawrencetown. And if you do chat with Barbara, she's a really great inn host, like what to do in the area. She can sort of give you an inside scoop on like where you can see the sunset, which is amazing.

And there's even a, a deserted rocky beach with the most beautiful views, but only the locals know about it. So she will share this information.

Jenn: Mm-hmm.

Meggan: I know. So because they're a new business and we had such a great state, I just wanted to take the time to highlight our experience and hopefully you can visit.

Barbara did give me a discount code, so if you do wish to book, Jenn will put the link to the Inn in our show. And again, it's the Edelweiss Inn and you can use the code VIP10 and you do get 10% off of your visit. So it's even more reason to go.

Jenn: Perfect.

Meggan: I know. So that is actually it for this week's Travel tip Tuesday. As always, you can find us on social media at Travel Mug Podcast at our website, travel mug podcast.com.
